Sports Jersey Cake

🍰 Ingredients:

For the Cake:

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temp
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk (or buttermilk)

For the Buttercream Frosting:

  • 1½ cups unsalted butter, room temp
  • 5–6 cups powdered sugar
  • 2–4 tbsp heavy cream or milk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Gel food coloring (team colors!)

For Decorating:

  • Fondant (optional for letters, numbers, logos)
  • Piping bags + tips
  • Edible marker or stencils for precision

🧁 Instructions:

1. Bake the Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a large rectangle or sheet pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 3-5 min).
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla.
  5. Alternately add flour mixture and milk, beginning and ending with flour.
  6. Pour into pan and smooth the top. Bake 30–35 min or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool completely on a wire rack.

2. Prepare the Buttercream

  1. Beat butter until fluffy.
  2. Gradually add powdered sugar. Add vanilla and milk to reach desired consistency.
  3. Tint with gel food colors to match your team’s colors!

3. Shape & Decorate the Jersey

  1. Once the cake is cool, gently carve the top corners to mimic a jersey shape (like a T-shirt).
  2. Apply a thin crumb coat of buttercream. Chill for 30 min.
  3. Apply final layer of colored buttercream and smooth with a spatula.
  4. Use piping bags to add outlines, seams, and stripes.
  5. Add fondant letters/numbers or pipe them with a fine tip.
  6. (Optional) Place a small fondant soccer/basketball/baseball near the base.
