Why Do Ants Move In Circles??

Ants sometimes move in circles due to a breakdown in their navigation system, which heavily relies on pheromone trails and following one another. When one ant accidentally begins walking in a loop, others may follow its trail, forming a continuous circle known as an “ant mill” or “death spiral.” This happens because ants instinctively trust the chemical path laid by their colony mates rather than individual navigation. Without external cues like sunlight or landmarks to correct their direction—especially on uniform surfaces—they can become trapped in this repetitive pattern. While rare, this behavior is a fascinating example of how complex group coordination can occasionally lead to confusion and self-destructive movement in the insect world.
